Gambling Cruise Review: SeaEscape

My wife and I went out on the SeaEscape Saturday evening. As is my custom, I'd like to provide you with my impressions of the ship and its amenities.

This SeaEscape ship, called the Island Princess, docks at Port Everglades, in Fort Lauderdale, at Pier 1. It is a fairly clean ship, bigger than the St. Tropez. It has cabins available, as well as upscale dining. Also, since it is not simply a gambling ship, it has other amenities, such as onboard movies, shows, musicians, dancing, etc. This is a cruise for people who want to party as much as for gamblers.

The ship departs at 7:45 P.M., and returns to dock at 1:45 A.M. The tables opened for gambling about a half-hour into the voyage, and stayed open until 1:00 A.M. So, there is plenty of time for quality gambling.

The food was pretty good, a little better than the St. Tropez, with a similar selection. They have an upscale menu available for an additional $10/person. We did not pay for it; however, after looking at the menu, it might be worth it, if and when we go again.

One major difference between the SeaEscape and the St. Tropez is the cost. The St. Tropez has no charge to get on the ship. The only charge is $15/person for dinner. The SeaEscape, on the other hand, charged $35/person admission, which included dinner. So, it is a little more expensive. However, it is understandable, based upon the level of additional entertainment and facilities.

Despite the party atmosphere, I found it to be a great ship for blackjack players. There were plenty of tables (in excess of 20), with minimum table limits from $5 to $100. I saw some serious blackjack players at the high limit tables. There were other games as well: Craps, Roulette, Let It Ride, Caribbean Poker and Three Card Poker. Also, interestingly, there was a separate room for Pai Gow Poker, with four tables set up. I did not see a Poker Room.

The blackjack rules are liberal Vegas rules: six decks, DOA, S17, DAS, and late surrender. The only negative rule was that there was no resplitting of aces. The penetration was generally pretty good, about 75-80% most of the time.

The best part about the setup of the ship is that there are a sufficient number of tables that I never had to wait to find a seat. I was surprised about this, since my modified method of play (getting up from the table after five consecutive losses) forces me to move around a lot. The casino has two rooms. The main room is long and narrow, with blackjack tables lined in two rows, surrounded by slot machines. Behind it is another room, which is primarily a show lounge, but has about 10 blackjack tables and some slot machines put in. I guess the shows are not all that popular; so they replaced the seating with tables. I spent basically the entire evening in the lounge area. It was more open, better lighted, and all smaller limit tables.

The dealers were generally pleasant, the floor supervisors were friendly and helpful, and the players were very relaxed and friendly.

There were only three negatives that I could see. First, as with any "party" ship, as the night wore on, people starting get more intoxicated. So, the noise levels increased, and the level of play deteriorated. However, nobody got abusive or obnoxious. Unlike other gambling experiences, on the SeaEscape I did not find any compulsive, over-bearing types, which was one of my major complaints about the St. Tropez. Second, this is not a ship for slot players. My wife is slot player. Generally, she does fairly well. However, on the SeaEscape, she started losing immediately, and continued to throughout the night; so much so, that she eventually gave up and sat up on deck for the rest of the evening. That was kind of a downer for me, since my pleasure at playing blackjack was tempered by my concern for her. Third, the wine selections on the ship were atrocious. The stuff was basically undrinkable... and expensive.

Overall, I would give the SeaEscape a B+ rating for blackjack players. I would definitely go again. And, surprisingly, even though my wife did not do well, she said she would try it again... if we got the upgraded meal menu!
